What is the Wye Web Site?
The Wye Web Site is a community project to promote the unique character of
Wye village and boost local commerce at the same time. Wye villagers and
local people can keep up with what’s happening in Wye and anyone
planning to visit can find out more information about the village.
As you visit different sections of the Wye Web Site you will discover
information on all aspects of life in Wye from shops and businesses, clubs
and societies to the library, the Parish Council, WyeCycle and much more.
You can also find out about the history of Wye and local landmarks such as
the Crown and Devil’s Kneading Trough. Don’t forget to check out
villagers’ own homepages.
Who is responsible for the site?
All the information on this site has been contributed by the
people of Wye. The Wye Web Site is co-ordinated by WyeSurf.
It is maintained and hosted on the Internet by Kantara,
who have also provided the web design. The beautiful watercolour
illustrations which you will come across throughout the site are the work
of Pat McNeill and Kate Rogers. The panoramic view of Wye from the downs is by Steve Bloom.
How will it be kept up-to-date?
The site is updated frequently and new additions and updated
pages will feature on the What’s New!
page. This will generate further interest and encourage
people to revisit often to see what’s new. We rely on people to tell us
about meetings and events coming up soon in the village so we can keep the
Diary of Events up to date.
How will people find the site?
There are a number of ways to find the Wye Web Site:
- Directly. By typing the address www.wye.org at any
computer with an Internet connection.
- Search Engines. By using an Internet index such as
Alta Vista, Yahoo or a regional index site. People searching for
information on Wye will be directed to the Wye Web Site.
- Reciprocal Links. Links between web sites encourage
visitors at one web site to visit the other site for relevant
information. It helps to add interest and value to the experience of
visiting either site and at the same time ensures increased exposure for
participating sites. We have succeeded in negotiating reciprocal
links with the web sites of organisations such as Ashford Borough Council, Kent County Council, Ashford Tourist Information, Countryside Commission, Imperial
College at Wye, Spokes, and the Co-op and are currently talking to a number of
other parties interested in similar arrangements. We have also linked to
personal web sites or "homepages" of Wye villagers and they
generally place a link on their pages to the Wye Web Site. We are always
looking to establish new links, and encourage you to send
us your suggestions for relevant links.
- Local promotion. WyeSurf promoted the launch of the
Wye Web Site in the local press and the Parish Magazine, and will
continue to promote the site.
- Email signature. Villagers who regularly send email
are invited to add a line with the address of their page or of the Wye
Web Site as a signature at the end of their message. You can
cut-and-paste the following example:
Visit the Wye Web Site at www.wye.org!
- Business stationery. Wye businesses can add the
address of their page on the Wye Web Site to their headed notepaper and
promotional literature.
Can I add my page to the Wye Web Site?
Yes, if you would like to add your company’s web page, your
organisation’s page or if you have your own personal web page which you
would like to link to the Wye Web Site, please
contact us. We can also create a web page for you on the Wye Web Site.
Can I have a Wye email address - even if I don’t
have email?
Absolutely. Anyone living or working in Wye is entitled to their
own unique Wye email address. If you would like your email to go to an
address such as yourname@wye.org please contact
us for further details. You can ask people to write to you using your
Wye address and your mail will automatically be forwarded to your existing
email box for you to collect. If you don’t have an email box and would
like us to help you set this up for you, please let us know. If you don’t
have email set up and don’t have any immediate plans to do this, you can
still tell people your Wye email address and we can provide a forwarding
service by fax or post.
What can I do to help the Wye Web Site?
Join in! This is a community project and we welcome any offers of
help. If you would like to submit material,
add links or help out in any way to enhance the Wye Web Site and the
image of the village then please contact us. We always need photographs,
pictures and other artwork especially old photos of Wye. Are there any
other aspects of Wye village life you think should have a mention? Is your
company or organisation holding a meeting or organising an event which we
can publicise for you on the Diary of Events?
If you have read one of the Wye books on
the book list and would like to send us a book review we will publish it
on the Wye Web Site.
