It is believed that the village
of Wye was first represented in the Ashford Saturday League in 1928 by
a team parading under the name of Blackhawks, and indeed, they were
runners-up in Division Two in the season 1929-1930.
Just after the Second World
War, the name was changed to Wye Town F.C., but subsequently the “Town”
element was dropped and Wye F.C. played on one day of a weekend, with a
second team Wye Wanderers, on another. This continued until the
1991-1992 season, when both the Saturday and Sunday teams amalgamated
under the banner Wye Wanderers F.C. The name still continues to this
day. Our club badge is the Wye crown and we are known locally as “The
Monarchs”.
We play at the Village Hall
pitch and always welcome new supporters. We currently have a team in
the Ashford and District Saturday League, and another in the Ashford
and District Sunday League, and have recently started a youth team who
are currently training, but we will hopefully be entering the East Kent
Youth League in the 2000-2001 season. The youth team trains every
Sunday afternoon between 2pm and 3pm at the village hall pitch and we
welcome new members between the ages of 5 and 15.
The membership fees are an
annual club membership of £5 for the adults teams, and £3 for the
youth teams and weekly subs of £3 per adult per game, £1.50 for
students, and 50p per child for training, and £1.50 per match. This is
our major source of income throughout the year and from this we take
all our running costs.
We have several fund raising
events through the year, the proceeds of which go towards replacement
kits, balls and other necessary equipment for all teams. Our major
social event of the season is our annual awards presentation, which we
hold in the village hall, followed by a disco, buffet and raffle. This
is always well supported and everybody has an enjoyable evening.
Some notable names in the club’s
history are Ian Sloane who for a number of years kept the club going
single handedly by being Treasurer, Secretary and sometimes Manager.
John Howland led the Club with perseverance to cup victory over
Bethersden in the 1980s against all odds.
